BIOGRAPHY

I am Joerg Daniel, born in 1961 in Germany, in the so called rhine ruhr area near cologne. Since 1986 I live and work as artist in Dortmund.

My artistic education started during the seventies by extensive theoretical studies about artists like  Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Sean Scully, Jackson Pollock, Paul Cezanne, Jean Tinguely, Pablo Picasso, Keith Haring, Jean Dubuffet, Joseph Beuys and many others more. Present artists I love and who inspire me are Anton Corbijn, Constant, Leon Golub, Thomas Hirschhorn, On Kawara, Jonas Mekas, Raymond Pettibon, Francis Picabia or Nari Ward, just to name a few. But nevertheless I understand mainly Dubuffet and sometimes Haring or Scully as the real influencers for the conversion of my artistic ideas into pictures or objects.

Most of my visuals are very much pop art – influenced. The reason for it is my former job as label manager und marketing - guy for companies of the international music business, where collaborations with artists like the Einstürzende Neubauten, Caspar Brötzmann Massaker, the Rainbirds, Die Krupps, Aphex Twin, Mouse on Mars, Dee Dee Ramone, the Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears have left their marks in my own artistic work, too.

Canvas, plastics, paper, metals and other (sometimes exotic) things are the materials I prefer to work with, where I can cover surfaces on, where I can describe own experiences in and where fears and also happiness can be found on. I also love to transfer personal thoughts into public, always trying to keep a distance to the special objects of my interests. But I also abuse them to distroy norms or convential rules at the same time. The light in it´s various forms of presentation hereby plays an extremely important role, too.

Since January 2003 I am an associated member of the so-called Kuenstlerhaus Dortmund
(www.kuenstlerhaus-dortmund.de), a well known artist organisation for modern art in my hometown.
